BLOG: What Products To Use When Dusting? Microfibre Cloths vs. Dusters

Whilst we've been stuck at home for the past six months dust has been sneakily building up in our homes and work areas without us even knowing! That's why it's the perfect time to do something about it before summer hits us again. Dust not only makes a room look dirty it also is a problem for all sorts of reasons: Tiny particles of skin, dirt, pollen, and dander can coat the surfaces of your furniture and walls, and as gross as it sounds they can also fill your lungs. Explaining why dust is often the underlying cause of allergies. Therefore consistent cleaning is essential if you want to rid your home of dust and mites, and the most efficient plan of attack is to clean often from the top down to avoid contaminating the areas you just dusted.

But then you get to the debate of what products to use. What ones are the best and most efficient to use in what environment when dusting. Some sources suggest that dusting with the traditional feather or synthetic duster may not be the best option! In this blog we'll discuss the pros and cons of standard dusters and what other products such as microfibre cloths would do a better job. We'll also give you our recommendations for each product so read on to get the best advice from the professionals themselves!

Pros:

1. Gentle around objects and ornaments:

Because most dusters have soft bristles it makes them very gentle around objects like ornaments etc. Therefore dusters are excellent at knocking dust off of objects without moving the objects themselves and creating more work for yourself!

2. Doesn't scratch surfaces:

As well as being gentle around objects the dusters barbs are so fine that they will not scratch furniture or surfaces making it much easier to dust around expensive and precious ornaments.

3. Easy to reach tall furniture:

Because dusters come on a long pole it makes it much easier to clean all the tall furniture and lights etc where dust loves to build up which can't necessarily be reached with a cloth. The dusters can also be attached to an extendable pole to help you reach even higher.

Cons:

1. It only scatters dust from one surface to another:

The problem with feather dusters and the likes is that while you cleaning the surface your dusting the dust particles are only being moved round the room from one surface to another. Therefore your not actually achieving anything as the dust is not being removed from the room entirely.

2. Are to be used gently:

The dusters barbs or bristles are generally very fragile, especially feather dusters, so dusting has to be done gently to avoid breaking the shafts.

Pros:

1. Removes dust with electric charge:

Because microfibre cloths are made up of tiny fibres when each fibre rubs together they create a static-electric charge, which increases their ability to find and cling to dust. Therefore rather than pushing or moving dirt from one surface to another, the microfibre cloth actually picks up the dust and removes it from surface.

2. Very versatile and can be used for vertically anything:

A microfibre cloth can be used for cleaning vertically anything whether its cleaning toilets, mopping floors, or dusting. This makes it extremely versatile and a very handy item to have around. Check out our previous blog on why Microfibre Cloths Are The Best for cleaning!

3. No chemicals needed:

Microfibre cloths can be used wet or dry to clean surfaces and don't require any other chemicals or polishes. They can remove up to 99% of dust, dirt and other residues just on their own. Microfibre Cloths are thought to be four times more effective than traditional cleaners.

Cons:

1. Moving objects is required:

Because the cloths aren't on a pole you have to be very careful when dusting around ornaments, therefore the best option is to remove the objects from the surface and dust separately to ensure nothing gets knocked over or broken. Although to really give your room the best clean it deserves it would be a good option to move the ornaments and remove all the dust hiding in the corners anyway!

Although both products would do the job perfectly, they both have fors and against so it really comes down to the cleaners preference and how serious the clean is. We think the most effective way to dust surfaces and do a deep clean in any area is by using a microfibre cloth. Although it may be more work moving objects to clean behind/under them because the microfibre cloth attracts the dust it removes it entirely from the surface rather swiping it from one surface to another. In saying this the traditional duster will collect a certain amount of dust therefore it's still a good option especially if you were wanting to do a quick clean (i.e. before visitors arrive etc.) without moving objects around the room.
